4 DAY AND 2 DAY OBSERVERSHIPS

The Cross‑Sectional Interventional Radiology (CSIR) Service at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, offers both a two‑day and four‑day Observership in image‑guided percutaneous tumor ablation. This educational activity is designed to introduce interested physicians to the contemporary practice of this type of minimally invasive cancer treatment. The Observership consists of didactic time spent with faculty who are experts in the fi eld, attendance at patient clinics and rounds, observation of ablation procedures and round‑table discussions with faculty.

OBJECTIVE

The Tumor Ablation Observership is designed to provide the participant with both practical elements of patient care and an understanding of the academic underpinnings of image‑guided focal therapies. Participants will be introduced to how focal therapy fi ts within the overall spectrum of oncologic care, and begin to recognize cases in which ablation may be indicated. Participants will learn about the different combinations of imaging modalities and ablation technologies (including cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation) so as to judiciously choose which is suitable for their own clinical practices. Participants will also learn the basic technical set‑up for such interventions. They will gain an introduction as to how patients are evaluated post‑procedurally in an ablation clinic, and how imaging studies are utilized and interpreted.

Goal for participants in the four‑day CSIR Tumor Ablation Observership include to:

  • Understand basic programmatic aspects of an ablation practice
  • Recognize the general role of tumor ablation in patient care
  • Gain an introduction into the preparation of patients, basic ablation techniques employed and principles of follow‑up.

For the two‑day option, our goals are the same, though with the expectation that the achievement in the two day observership would be commensurate with the duration of the option as compared to the four‑day option.

The Tumor Ablation Observership is limited in duration, and therefore does not constitute a complete training, nor bestow a “certifi cation” to the participant or any credentialing to perform ablation procedures.
